MACBETH

Majesty. Murder. Madness.

Macbeth | 2027

By William Shakespeare

Directed by Lesedi Job

5 February – 13 March 2027 | Maynardville Theatre

About this Production

In a world rebuilt from catastrophe, Southland survives around one of the last sources of clean water. When the victorious general Macbeth encounters three mysterious weavers of fate, their prophecy offers him and his grieving wife the possibility of a different future.

But when Macbeth and Lady Macbeth choose to force fate into their own hands, ambition becomes an act of destruction. Leadership gives way to tyranny, the natural order begins to unravel, and the fragile world around them is plunged into darkness.

Shakespeare’s great tragedy is reimagined as a visceral story of grief, power, consequence – and what remains when we destroy what is most precious.

Running Time:

Approximately 95 minutes without an interval.

Suitability Recommendation

Recommended for ages 12 and over. Contains depictions of violence, death and mature themes.

Director’s Note

Macbeth is a play about the stories we tell ourselves before we cross a line.

What interested me most was not the inevitability of Macbeth’s downfall, but the series of choices that make it possible. Love, loss, fear and longing all become entangled with power, until the distinction between destiny and decision begins to disappear.

This production explores the human need to impose certainty on an uncertain world, and the violence that can follow when control becomes more important than conscience.

At its heart, Macbeth asks a deeply human question: once we have chosen a path, are we still capable of turning back?

I will be staying true to Shakespeare’s text because it holds the story so well, while reimagining its world. Our Macbeth is set in Southland, a post-apocalyptic society rebuilt after a great collapse. Together with the cast, we’ll shape its conventions, values and ways of being, discovering how Shakespeare’s story can speak to audiences in 2027.
